Bureaucracy Chic

I know I have been threatening to post images of my new and improved office for a while now and still haven't gotten around to it.  It's just that I still have one empty wall and our resident photographer has her hands full with a 17 pound distractenator named Ike.  In the mean time, I bring you images from offices around the world in part of photographer Jan Banning's series, Bureaucratics

So, still no pictures of my office, but I promise these are a million times interesting.  See the complete series here

More Office Inspiration

Sorry for the late post today, yesterday was my wedding anniversary and the hubs and I went to dinner so I didn't write my post last night.  Bad!  Bad Karly!  As promised on Monday, I've rounded up more office inspiration, let's see if you smarty pants can guess what these pictures have in common:

So we've figured it out by now?  Man, you guys are AMAZING!  So, yeah, I love things en masse, cluster up just about anything and I'll swoon.  I have lots of colorful art in simple frames that is poised to be hung all about my office salon-style.  Here are more inspiration pics

Ok, this isn't quite the look I'm going for, but I do have a pair of antlers that might make the cut

As part of the magical "heirloom" collection my mother sent, I received a couple of pieces that are not unlike these.  The giant gold guilded frames may or may not find a home in my office.

Ok, it's a bit much.  I also don't like that couch or the stacked spools of thread.

Yes, I've shown you this before, but who can get enough of that table????  Oh, wait, I mean that clustered art????

Clean Cluster

Crazy Cluster!

Karly Cluster!

That's me in my old apartment about 4 or 5 years ago.  I won't be revisiting the empty frames motif in my current space, I just wanted to show that the cluster art thing isn't a new theme for me.

Working at Home Away From Home

I've been doing freelance for about 5 years.  I've been completely self-employed for just over 2.  While I may not know exactly how a 401K works, I do get to work in my pajamas, make my own hours, and go on vacation whenever I would like.  There are a few draw-backs - in addition to the 401K thing - for example, sometimes I never get out of my pajamas; my social circle consists of Laser, Magnus, Rowdy and, sometimes, Matt; and, with an office in my house, I'm always filled with "I should be working" guilt and don't quite know when to clock out.  Enter Shelter in Dubai

Looks like any old coffee shop, right?  While coffee shops are often repurposed by us freelancers as a make-shift office, Shelter has taken the concept one step further:  This is an office space for freelancers and small business owners.

For a minimum monthly fee, sole proprietors can rent office space at Shelter, conducting the business of one surrounded by a team of peers.  Shelter's mission is to facilitate the creativity that comes from interaction while, well, getting you the hell out of your pajamas and into the world.

Members have benifits that include access to a cinema, a lecture hall (supposedly they have great creative guest lectures lined up but that page wasn't working), classrooms a little shop, and, most importantly:

The brasserie.  Look at that spread, it sure as hell beats the PBJ and BBQ chips I normally indulge in.  I actually think this food is included at no additional charge.  But I'm not sure, so, all you readers in Dubai, don't go knockin on their door demanding a free lunch without double checking first.

While I'm quite pleased with the interior decor in my own home, I wouldn't be too mad if I found myself eating lunch here a few days a week.  At whatever time I like, of course.

Here is where I give power point presentations to impress all of my potential clients.  Ok, I don't know how to use power point (another benefit of working for myself, I've never seen this in action).

This is where I spend all the extra cash I make while working in their lovely space.

I am absolutely in love with this concept and pray that some wise entrepreneur decides to open a similar space state-side; specifically, in South Austin.  I'll help decorate.
