I’ve got (almost) nothing

I have to admit, everyone, I actually only planned my posts through the end of last week.  I had sorta kinda hoped that Erin would be taking over as head mistress of Design Crisis while I was at home nursing my new babe.  Alas, twas not yet to be and little Mystery Pants is still camped out in mommy’s belly.  It’s cool, we’re keeping busy.  But, as a result, I’m drawing a bit of a blank when it comes to today’s post.  I did find this radical video, directed by DC fave, Banksy for American Institution The Simpsons:

And just to keep the Banksy theme going, here’s a shot of Banksy’s most recent work to pop up on the streets of London:

Yep, that’s all.  If I’m here on Thursday, and I bet I will be, I promise to blow your dang pants off with some spectacular design.  Or at least write something funny.

Exit Through The Gift Shop

I love documentaries.  I will (and have) watch a documentary on just about every subject.  However, the perfect storm of captured moments, interesting characters, untapped subjects and social commentary combined with humor and a bit of street smarts to make a documentary that plays like a screenplay labored over for years only comes along once in a decade or so.  Exit through the gift shop, a documentary within a documentary wrapped in a riddle, that explores art as commodity, is one of these rare gems

I’m the type of person who doesn’t really like to know much about a movie before seeing it, so the above is a short trailer. If you’re up for more, watch this:

And if you MUST know even more, check out the reviews here here and here

but honestly, the thing is genius, hilarious, and SMART. Just go see it. It’s playing for a limited time in these cities. If you miss it on the big screen, you can toss it in your netflix que.

Banksy Is a Genius

So I’m a little ticked off because I had to delete my last post about Tom Wolfe’s pompousness because The Selby said I couldn’t use his pictures. That’s funny… I feel like I’ve seen his pictures elsewhere. I mean, like EVERYWHERE. Mostly, I think The Selby saw a storm brewing between me and a gallery dealer regarding King Tom’s espousal of ersatz artist, Frederick Hart. At least I called Hart a faux artist, but his gallery rep vehemently disagreed. Surprise, surprise.

To make a long, pissy story short, I came across this quote by actual artist Banksy on Ffffound and it was like a rallying cry for me, an epiphany that something must be done about crappy “art.”

banksy quote

Bright young things, I know you need to make a living, that eating tuna from cold tin cans and sleeping in a cardboard box is not appealing, but HELP!!! Please save us from a world where Frederick Hart is listed in the same sentence as Isamu Noguchi and Helen Frankenthaler (again, according to his rep).

I can’t live in that world.
