I just spent the entire Labor Day weekend looking at homes with my inlaws, who are considering a move to Austin. While they were pretty glazed over by the end of our shopping whirlwind, I was totally keyed up, because I am crazy obsessed with real estate — like I tour houses in my sleep. Including houses I’ve looked at for myself, friends, family, and potential investment, I’ve probably been in hundreds of houses in Austin, so I thought maybe I’d start a little feature on Austin real estate.

Today’s home comes in at $295,000, and whether you think that is expensive or cheap probably depends on where you live now. For Austin, that’s about 100k above the median home price, but I’m just going to go ahead and say that it’s worth every penny.

The Clause Residence was designed in 1979 and features just over 2000 glorious sq ft of Memphis inspired deliciousness. I want to hole up and marathon watch Miami Vice (the original) up in here.

Since you know that the hubs, Ike, and I, are currently house shopping, you may be wondering why the bleep I haven’t already signed the papers on this piece of design history. I mean, never mind the fact that it only has two bedrooms — Ike and our future progeny can just bunk up, right?

Dudes, this house is so far from town, we may as well move to Waco.

Sadly, I was not able to tour this baby in person because it would have been an all day event, but I just know that it’s every bit as awesome as the pictures, and probably way more. I really hope there is somewhere out there that buy this house and do it up righteous, and then they better invite me over for a pool party. You know… as a finder’s fee.

Check out the MLS listing and more pics here.

damn! too bad it isn’t closer to town.
i love it; i can only imagine that that house anywhere near me would be at least double the price. (not being a realtor, though, maybe the number of bedrooms is a factor; and of course location, location, location.)

  2. I was wondering what the catch was.

I too had to wonder what was wrong since it was too fab for the price…location location location…sigh.

I kind of appreciate the fact that it’s farther out. because man, there’s nothing that cool in dallas in that price range. $295k still gets you some wack-ass ish up hurr.

Wow! I thought homes in Austin would be way more expensive than that — it seems so hip and chic — I wonder why the median price is so low.

I live on the other side of the country — Springfield, MA — and our housing stock is fabulous in old Victorian ways and also super cheap (I think our median price for 2009 was $150,000). But we’re not hip or chic :(

  7. I love this new column, it’s perfect for you. That house is stupid awesome. If there is a matching one next door I can buy it then at least you’ll have a friend way out in the middle of nowhere. we can send our children to boarding school to buy ourselves a bit more square footage. See, problem solving, that’s what I’m good at.

  8. for $295K here in Melbourne town you would get a festy shit hole in crapsville! the real estate here has gone ridiculously insane & makes me very cranky!
recently my neighbours TINY and very plain house went to auction -the auctioneer started the bidding at 1 mill. he then went on to say ‘a million is just a number, buy a house, then visit your parents & ask to borrow $500k. Thankfully no one was stupid enough to buy it!
As I dont want to live in a festy stink hole shit house, Im happy to keep on the rent bandwagon for now & live in a fabulous neighbourhood!
    real estate makes me cranky!

  9. $295K buys a lot of house here (San Antonio), and the commute wouldn’t be that big an issue — but two bedrooms would be a deal breaker, for nearly everyone I know.

As an artist and writer, though, I can say that little gem would make a freakishly awesome studio!

  10. While I’m not usually a Memphis fan, this house has some pretty great things going on! At that price it’s a snatch. I mean a catch. Too bad it’s far from the city. (PS, I’ll be in Austin next weekend.. tell me where I need to go!! PPS. I’m cool and hip and want to do cool and hip things. And then I want to go to thrift stores and antique stores. Too much of a request?)

$295K… I am in shock. Here in London I’m renting at £stupid every month as I can’t afford to get on the property ladder. The 1 bedroom flat below mine in East London was valued at around the £400K mark. That’s GBP, not USD! Seriously considering chucking in the London living and upping to Austin. There’s always skype for work, yes???

Come on over, Claire — we’d love to have you!
