So I’m a little ticked off because I had to delete my last post about Tom Wolfe’s pompousness because The Selby said I couldn’t use his pictures. That’s funny… I feel like I’ve seen his pictures elsewhere. I mean, like EVERYWHERE. Mostly, I think The Selby saw a storm brewing between me and a gallery dealer regarding King Tom’s espousal of ersatz artist, Frederick Hart. At least I called Hart a faux artist, but his gallery rep vehemently disagreed. Surprise, surprise.

To make a long, pissy story short, I came across this quote by actual artist Banksy on Ffffound and it was like a rallying cry for me, an epiphany that something must be done about crappy “art.”

banksy quote

Bright young things, I know you need to make a living, that eating tuna from cold tin cans and sleeping in a cardboard box is not appealing, but HELP!!! Please save us from a world where Frederick Hart is listed in the same sentence as Isamu Noguchi and Helen Frankenthaler (again, according to his rep).

I can’t live in that world.

  1. WTF, every blog on god’s green earth has been posting Selby pictures. Why is he giving YOU a hard time? And, it’s almost too easy, but faux art = “fart?”

  2. erin says:

He’s giving me a hard time, I am sure, because I reacted negatively to the subject of his pictures, instead of with glowing praise for everything he touches. It sucks because I do think he’s a great photographer. But I still think Tom Wolfe is a douche.

And “fart” is hilarious! F’art (what do you think?) — what you see at galleries frequented by a certain middle aged, upper class set.

  3. F’art… perfect! It needed that apostrophe. Lotsa F’art in Santa Fe, too. I remember before I went there a few years ago, I’d heard so much about what a great artists’ town it was, how there were all these amazing galleries up on Canyon Road, etc. Canyon Road itself IS amazing, but all the art I saw was appalling. Like, oil paintings of Native Americans on horseback in full traditional garb gazing meaningfully into floridly colored sunsets, appalling.

WHAT? I actually think I’ve seen The Selby’s photos on every single journal/blog/shoelace everywhere for the past month. SURELY he’s not actually emailing everyone publicizing his photos and asking them to remove them from their sites, is he? If he is, well… good luck.

Also, did you notice that “F’art” nicely combines “Frederick” and “Hart”, too?

  5. erin says:

Anna, thanks for giving a new meaning to F’art… I love it! F’art may be the best thing to come out of this whole mini-debacle.

And I don’t know what’s up with The Selby. I guess he really likes Tom Wolfe. A lot.

For the record, my reply to Hart’s rep was “Frosted glass boobies = bad taste.”

I just took The Selby off my blogroll. I look after my homies.

I used to live in New Mexico and constantly have to smile through conversations these days when people talk about the great art in Santa Fe. There is one GREAT gallery: http://www.sitesantafe.org/

On the subject of the selby post: in the end, it really doesn’t matter if you like Federick Hart art or not, artists make their living expressing their opinions, it saddens me that we had to remove our post for expressing our own opinions.

  10. erin says:

Aw, Raina, thanks for always getting our collective back, but you don’t have to take the Selby down for us! (Although it makes me smile)

As Karly pointed out, we are all entitled to our own opinions, and that’s why I published badartloverlady’s comments with a rebuttal. I knew I laid the gauntlet down and I didn’t cry like a baby when she slapped me with it.

It’s so ridiculous that some people can’t handle a bit of criticism.

  11. I am so behind the times. I just read about all the Selby b.s. sorry bout that. And I agree, I’ve seen the selby pictures all over the gd intrawebbyblogoshphere myself.

Thanks, Sherri! I feel so whatever about it by now, but Raina has been busy over on her blog…
