Well, friends, after ranting about things that annoy me (and then get deleted) for the past day or two, I thought I’d put on my happy face and share what may be the cutest website ever with you. Everyone likes stuffed animals, right? Click on the picture to see a larger screen shot.

campana

Brazilian designers Fernando and Humberto Campana create some seriously wacky furnishings and accessories, and you can’t help but giggle while watching teddy bears get airlifted from vending machines to join their fuzzy wuzzy brothers and sisters in chair land.

I know they’re silly, but they just make smile. Ouch. That hurts. I kind of wish I had a kid so I could justify having one of those alligator chairs for little him or her. I’m not sure how I would feel about buying one for myself… Oh, who cares. I want one. The panda and dolphin chairs are available through Moss, also seen at Crooked Brains.

The brothers Campana do make slightly more sophisticated furnishings as well, most of which are material-driven. The table on the left is made from plastic drain covers while the colorful table tops below are strung with lawn furniture rope cord.

A pair of chairs also made from humble materials:

On their awesome website, every project is accompanied by a visual story, and the graphic design is pretty fantastic and extremely intricate. For example, the animation accompanying the “Sushi” pieces below features a whirling pinwheel of tables set on a psychedelic background. Trippy, dude.

I think that couch is not too shabby for something made of carpet padding and styrofoam mats. What do you guys think?

Here are a few subdued pieces, all of which I could picture in a real home:

Rest assured, though, I couldn’t leave you with something normal:

On the left is the “Anemone” chair (aka, “The Bird’s Nest”) made of clear garden hoses and on the right is the “Boa” sofa made of interconnected velvet sausage-like strands. Velvet sausage. Yum.

And finally, the designers themselves:

fernando and humberto

Humberto started out with a law degree, while Fernando majored in architecture. Whatever you must do to earn a few feathers in your cap, I guess. They’re kind of adorable. I want to squeeze little Fernando’s cheeks, and feed Humberto a sandwich.

Isn’t my good side nice?

  1. So many designers have the law degree past… last year I was thinking (delusionally) that law school was next for me. But now I figure, fuckit, let’s just figure out this design shit instead of pretending law/money is going to motivate me. Design if it kills me!

I like the panda chair because it looks really cozy and bobbley.

The alligator chair seems like it should be in a 70s glass house on the bayou. Maybe?? Maybe not…

  2. BTW I am sad you had to delete your posts… I mean, snark is a great element of humour and satire and there’s plenty of happy glitteriness to this blog too. Everyone is entitled to an opinion. I thought it was a bit weird how it was almost like that sculptor’s stalker googled his/her way here to defend…

  3. Oh duh, maybe I should read further before I post. Still, bit funky!

WP, thanks for your support! The lovely people I have met so far are the best thing(s) about blogging. And the unlovely people drive me up the wall, but I’ve got to learn self control sometime, right?

    ps, Law??? Nooooo!

And I think that I would enjoy living in a 70′s glass walled house on the bayou. As long as I never had to go outside of it.

Oh! these chairs are the stuff dreams are made of! I WOULD buy one for myself!

I actually think those dudes did a collaboration with, ahem, Disney recently… unless another set of designers paired with the devil’s cartoonist to create mickey mouse stuffed animal chairs. I’ll try and find it for you

I am not surprised. After yesterday’s drama, I have let my snark guard down so low that even Disney-like things seem bright and shiny. Sigh.

  7. please sir says:

Those chairs are so crazy and neat! Thanks for sharing!

Design wonk question – Are they referencing Jean-Charles de Castelbajac’s 1989 teddy bear chair?

Chicken & Egg – I think JC/DC’s coat came first:

    Oh, this takes me back…

  10. erin says:

I wasn’t familiar with him or that chair (yay! now I have new things to check out!!!), but it certainly looks familiar, doesn’t it?

And I kind of love that teddy coat, although the Keith Haring yellow romper is HOT. At least, I would wear it. Perhaps not even ironically.

Finally, JC/DC is a really cool moniker. I think I should change my name.

  11. Love, love, love the sushi couch. The color and pattern are GORGEOUS. When you guys come to visit me for the SNL premiere, we will go to Moss. And then after-show drinks with MP at Goldbar, where they will card us because his youthful aura will envelop us, making us appear young enough not to be of age.

Incidentally, my boss told me the other day that apparently a woman in her thirties who goes after a younger guy is a puma. Wikipedia says puma is merely another name for a cougar, which is unsatisfactory. Why can’t we be lynxes? (OK so I am still 29, but I want to be a predatory mountain cat.)

  12. erin says:

I was going to email you about Phelpsie’s upcoming appearance on SNL, but of course, silly me, you probably knew about it before he did. Could you actually get in if you wanted to? Being a country bumpkin, I know not how these things work but it would be so much fun! You would just have to learn how to hyperventilate quietly, so as not to attract attention and get thrown out of the building.

And lynxes are definitely sexier than pumas. Since I just turned 32, it MATTERS to me. Er, I mean it would matter if I weren’t already happily married.

  13. oh no, I had no clue; Raina emailed me! I have no idea how to get tickets, but I don’t imagine it’s too too easy, especially with the large herds of better-connected lynxes and cougars and gays (oh my!) who will be stampeding towards Rock Ctr for that particular event…

  14. karly says:

I just noticed that every last one of the lovely items above is listed “price available upon request” maybe after we ply MP with cocktails after the SNL show we can talk him into buying them for us?
