I remember when I would run into all my friends at a bar on any given Wednesday.  A couple of years later I started bumping into them all at weddings and (do you see where this is going) these days I seem to see my favorite ladies in groups most frequently at baby showers.  What conclusions can we draw from this:  1.  I’m getting old.  2. I’m not sure why we ever stopped going to bars on Wednesdays and 3.  Eventually I was going to get sucked into the baby crazy too.  Yep, babies are the new black and I’m cooking up my own.

We’re 5 months along (I’m sorry I didn’t tell you dudes sooner, I just didn’t want this to turn into some lame mommy chat room) and just this past Tuesday we found out that we’re having a bouncing baby boy.  We’re BEYOND excited and now it’s time to decorate his room.

I hate to admit that my number one nursery inspiration room is also the most popular baby’s room ever to hit the interwebs but I just can’t help it.  The room of Beckett, Jenna Lyon’s son, is just filled with everything I love.   There will be no knock offs, but don’t be surprised if you see this pallet again over the next few months.

I spent some serious time considering a mural like the one here for his room.  I even found this exact mountain scape.  But ultimately decided that I wanted to cover the walls in clustered art (surprise!) and figured I would get sick of the mural before the little dude even popped out.

One thing I’ve realized while pulling photos for le bebe’s room is that I really like stuff hanging from the ceiling.   I’m hoping and praying to find a dream chandelier for a bargain basement price but I haven’t ruled out the possibility of a clustered grouping of goodies hanging in a corner somewhere.

Of course, there’s always the option of keeping it clean and simple.  Ok, who am I kidding?  There’s no way I’m giving up a crazy sweet mobile so that an arc light can shine on the baby all night long.

Minus the crib too close to the floor, and plus some cooler artwork this is probably more my speed

If I want to creep the baby out I’ll go with this assylum-chic space.  It will be good for the baby to learn all about anatomy, sweeping and ironing before he’s able to walk, right?

Because I’ve never found fault with this pallet (see image #1) this photo generally tugs at my soul.

I’ve been picking up a few random items over the last few months, they all tend to fit into the black / white / yellow theme, so I think that’s where we’re going.  The walls in the room are light grey now, but I can’t decide if they should stay that way.  This is where you come in.  Tell me everything you would do that doesn’t involve snuggly elephants in bonnets or sunbathing bunny rabbits.

Oh, and no asking what his name is, you got to find out he was a boy on the same day you found out he exists (I’ve been waiting 5 months for the luxury), the name is under wraps until his October due date.  xoxo!

congratulations! very very exciting news. ahhhh, I remember being pregnant with my first… sob. I was such a child. She is 12 now, and I have 4 of the little darlings and although I would rather chop my arms off than have to go through pregnancy and babyhood again (I did the next best thing and chopped my husband’s vas deferens instead hee hee) I must say they were all very special times….

I will look forward to seeing what you come up with. I am extremely confident that no owl wall decals will be involved. Enjoy!

  2. Hey! Congratulations!

Now Ike will have someone to keep him company during those trips to RoundTop.

congrats to you and your hubby!! So exciting :)

I’m diggin those rooms with black walls a lot, but somehow I wonder if that is bad for baby? Like will he subconsciously turn into a goth? I kid, I kid.

Actually I know nothing about babies. I’m still in that “bumping into friends at weddings” phase….

Congratulations Karly! This is going to be such a great new chapter in your life! And in a few months time, lack of sleep will have you forgetting all about Wednesdays (and showering, and eating, and life in general). ;0)

But seriously, I hope you feel wonderful! And I love the direction your going with the room. That first one is everyone’s favorite for good reason. It’s amazing and a great jumping off point.

    Hey there,
I’ve never commented here before, but as a mom I can totally appreciate your avoidance of the mommy chat room vibe. But congratulations! My little guy is now 2 1/4 and is the most amazing person. It’s a fantastic adventure (although I really did feel like going out for a drink last night)…

Anyhow: you should definitely consider lots of stuff hanging from the ceiling of the kid’s room (not the scary arc lamp over the poor boy’s crib, though – yikes). The giant paper pom-poms in many colours look amazing clustered together, and we were also heavily into vintage mobiles. I recently bought a lot of vintage travel pennants off Ebay, which my kid is loving. And now he knows about the Roy Rogers-Dale Evans Cowboy Ranch!

  6. Congratulations to you and Matty! Can’t wait to see how his room comes along… :)

YEAH! A BOY! (partial to boy-babies, here.)
Seriously, congratulations. Enjoy this time- you’ll only be pregnant with *this* baby once.

I’m sooooooo glad you’re finally out of the closet! I know I know I know we shouldn’t do baby chat room, but me and Ike are lonely in virtual babyville.

Love all these rooms, and thinking you should go white. Maybe paint the ceiling with little black stars and one big star where the lamp canopy goes… ok, so this was my plan that I never got around to putting into action. I still like the idea, though.

Congrats! That kid is going to have one set of cool parents. You’ll make a great mom. Can’t wait!

HUGE Congrats!!! I hope you’re feeling OK….Love your inspiration rooms…asylum chic made me laugh.

  11. First Ike, then Ozzy – there must be something in the Austin water supply making baby boys.

Congrats to you and MattyPants! You two are going to make the best parents (and one enormously tall baby)!

I love where you’re headed with the decor – it will complement the gray stripes in the hallway fabulously. You know I’ll be bombarding you with links as I come across cool baby stuff.

  12. AB says:

    Yay, baby! Congratulations!

Love the color combo of black/white/yellow. You can’t go wrong!

Mega congrats to you! I love the dark walls in a baby room. If not chalkboard black, then a lot of deep blues can be groovy too!

Congrats! Super exciting. Can’t wait to see what you come up with for his room!

Unfortunately, we are not as crafty for our little boy’s room. We are just going to use the top drawer of our dresser as a crib. I figure he can sleep in there until he’s big enough for a hammock. I would also like to take this opportunity to announce his name. Sgt. Slaughter.

I guess the days of sitting at the Diner with baseball hats, pulled back hair, an In Touch magazine with the stench of Mojitos and day old Right Guard permeating from our skin will be fewer and will now be replaced with days of sitting with Stoneyfield organic yo baby food and finger paints reading Curious George. I think we can adjust. I do not nor will I ever have chilren(the last time I saw a vagina was when I flew out of one 42 years ago)and option two still sounds more appealing to me. That doesn’t stop me though from sharing in the joy of the beautiful women in my life who experience such an event. I was online today looking for the perfect Austin-like baby gift and was quite amazed at how far baby gifts have come…Organic hand sewn vegetable teethers?? Thats a far cry from the wooden clothespin and orajel my mother used to shove in my mouth when these pearly whites started to sprout. Its no wonder I had Sean Cassidy hanging on the back of my door. Anyways, this child will be lucky to have you and Matt at the helm not to mention such a beautiful, youthful, and vibrant grandparent.(Connie’s not so bad either)Can’t wait to see you next weekend. Sorry for the rambling. Its been awhile since I have responded to a blog of yours. All my love to Erin, Ike and all of you Austinites.

  18. CONGRATS, KARLY!!!

I was just working on a kids room and had almost all the same inspiration pics.

Baby boy is going to have a badass room.

    xoxoxoxo

  19. Cassie says:

    Congratulations Karly!!!

And I really like all the rooms you posted, except the asylum-chic one, which no. Not for baby.

Regarding sweeping before walking: do not slag this possibility just yet My Dear Karly.

A Montessori program : ) constructs the perfect DIY child. Trust me. My children sorted black/white/colors (and could starch a shirt…NO KIDDING)….b4 the 3rd grade…..)

The anatomy, agreeably…creepy. Could it be done in a more graphic/less science-book kinda way as to enhance a bebe’s stimuli? Hence, lessening the nightmare potential?

The black/white/yellow/gray nursery….? NO ONE could ever do it like you!

YOU are going to be the UBER-Mommy….and Connie? Well….we will chat sans-da-Karly.

  21. Congratulations, Karly! Look at you – keeping this under wraps all this time! I’m so happy for you! And Beckett’s room really is the best baby’s room ever. I don’t think they should change a thing until he goes off to college – except maybe get him a bed. I highly endorse those color choices. And I actually like yellow and black with gray to soften it up a little. So maybe you can work with the existing gray? Congratulations again!

  22. Welcome to the dark side my friend, we have been waiting for you. Nurseries are fun to decorate, but Tallulah never spends any time in there besides to sleep. The fun part is when you have start redecorating your house to keep things away from little hands and have toys and books all over the place. We need to find you a giant panda head toy box stat. Seriously a chic (or in my case kitschy) toy box you can live with in your main living space is a God send. That and a less than lame high chair to leave in the middle of your dining room.

  23. congratulations to you both! this is such a great time in your life:) it is so fun to design a baby’s room, mine is almost 3 and i’m totally ready to re-design…those inspiration rooms are great and i love the color choices for a boy-definitely not the standard baby blue which i don’t agree with. have fun and i can’t wait to see more of your finds for his room. yay!

  24. Much congratulations to you and the baby daddy!
