I desperately want to tell you about all the exciting! plans! I’ve cooked up thanks to your comments for our kitchen facelift, but I’m just way too sick. We’re on week a million of the bubonic plague and I kind of want to shoot Little Orphan Annie in the head for even suggesting that the sun might come out tomorrow… I really don’t want to get my hopes up. Because most likely we’re in for another month of snot and misery and it’s best to look a bleak future square in its runny face and get on with it.

Honestly the entire situation wouldn’t be so bad if only I had some good tv to watch. I feel like I’ve seen EVERYTHING. Suggestions?

Anyway, sorry for dumping pink eye all over your day. Here are some toe curling good kitchens that have interesting, daring design elements. Hopefully they will be enough to get me off your naughty list.

Next up: wood kitchens. Who’s with me?

  1. :( This flu season has been AWFUL!!!!!! My boys have it too, hope everyone is better soon and then bring on the wood kitchens!! Hang in there lady!

  2. that first one, oh lord!! Will my kitchen look like that?

Feel better!! I’m sick too. And heading on vacation tomorrow. Sucks. Oh well, better to be sick in Mexico than sick in Philly, right?

  3. first of all are you drinking your apple cider vinegar?? hmmmm?????

second of all you know how i feel about that roman and williams masterpiece….but a new favorite kitchen has rolled into town and that would be kitchen #1. i am actually mad about it’s popularity. bc i will most assuredly see copycat versions all over the internet which will ruin my own copycat version down the road.

Ooooooh, pretty! Shiny! I’m especially lusting after the copper (?) pendant lamps in the first kitchen.

I’ve gotten into watching the Murdoch Mysteries and old episodes of Bewitched. Warehouse 13, Psych, Grimm, and Fringe are all on my watch list these days.

I hope your house gets better quickly!

#2 is my longtime favorite dream kitchen, but #1 and #4 are new introductions to me, which I absolutely love. (#4 only being a possibility if I get rid of my husband first – possibly a good trade.) I was thinking about YOUR kitchen when I saw another similar ceiling today and realized, there probably used to be some monstrosity of an inset fluorescent light in that “tray”, and the former remodel was just “let’s take out the fluorescent light and leave it’s gaping hole”. Right? So, I think that’s good, because it’s much less likely anything awful and unmovable is lurking in the soffit. It was just done that way because it was *in* at the time, to have a drop ceiling with a huge fluorescent light in it (my childhood kitchen had that exact set-up). You probably already know this, but it was a lightbulb for me. Unfortunately, MY soffit is almost-to-the-cabinet-line-but-not-quite, which really makes me feel like I’m dealing with full-size hvac duct-work behind it. Boo.

As for TV, I have actually resorted to “The Carrie Diaries”(!!?!) and old episodes of Frasier, so um, no suggestions unless you haven’t already seen all of Better Off Ted, Pushing Daisies, and Dead Like Me.

So sorry you’re all sick. I started to feel the familiar scratchy-roof-of-the-mouth feeling yesterday afternoon, and despite liberal applications of tangerines and tea, I am now clearly ill. But still not coughing disgustingly enough to be ordered home. Sigh.

Those kitchens are amazing. That calacatta and…silver leaf?…one is (and after my design file addiction this is saying something) one I would never have imagined if I had not seen it. But I am officially over $10,000 stoves. I feel that’s like parking a Jaguar with an all-leather interior in the middle of your living room and bragging about your great design sensibilities. (And I am delighted that in some of these photos I cannot even SEE a stove.)

Recently on hulu I found “Restoration Realities”; the hosts are lousy at being on TV but very good at carpentry. I can overlook the (lack of) ueber-polished made-for-TV personality because they are restoring to original condition some stunning (mostly Victorian) architecture. Best DIY show on TV. But there’s only about 5 episodes available. You could watch “I Hate My Kitchen,” too, which I enjoy because of the budgeting aspect, but you’re not gonna like the kitchens. Also my husband and I just started on a Parks & Rec marathon. And I second the recommendation of Bewitched. But my very favorite: every episode of Julia & Jacques: Cooking at Home is on hulu, and they are ADORABLE, and I need to learn to make that soup. (It sounds like I do nothing but watch TV. Sigh.)

I hope you all feel better extremely soon because I cannot wait to see in-progress kitchen photos! And because I’m sure you’d all like to be healthy and energetic.

  7. I cant think of any kinda cheer up thing to say that will leave you NOT wanting to punch me in the face. So just moving on to the TV stuffs – Im getting into Californication again. A great Aussie comedian that I love Tim Minchin plays the rockstar & when I was watching it the other night it even made me clap for the love of it – & I aint no clapper!!! But my go to when I need one is always the most brilliant Arrested Development. Always – always more gold to be found when watching that!

  8. Christine says:

Okay, you are more than okay in the kitchen department (that first one is ah.may.zing!!), so I’m going to concentrate on TV recommendations. For American stuff, there’s Parks and Recreation, Community, Girls, the Newsroom. British stuff: there’s Dowton Abbey of course, but then there’s also an amazing show called The Hour about the BBC in the 50′s.

I’ve also been getting into a bunch of Scandinavian shows! Full disclosure, I have no idea how to get these – I have a husband who is savvy with the downloading business. But these shows are AMAZING. There’s one called Borgen that’s about politics in Denmark; there’s “Forbrydelsen” which is the original Danish show that American remake “The Killing” is based on; and there’s another one we just finished watching called “Real Humans”, a swedish sci-fi show about cyborgs.

Finally, when in doubt, there’s always Seinfeld. It’s still funny.

Good luck. I am dealing with my own load-bearing beam kitchen business, I’m so excited to see how you deal with yours.

  9. Kathleen says:

I’ve been sick with the flu off and on for about a month. I’ll start to feel better for a few days and then have the scratchy feeling in the back of my throat and gooey eyes and it comes on again. Seriously my body is such a wuss – just fight those germs off already. My TV viewing has denigrated to endless episodes of Pawn Star and Storage Wars. There seems to be nothing on and I don’t have Netflix where I could at least watch 7 years of Dr. Who (apparently).

Back to kitchens – I’m seriously in love with #4′s shiny goodness. I’m sure if I owned it I would be forever anxious about fingerprints but its very pretty to look at.

  10. Allison says:

I know almost nothing of kitchens, so here are my tv recs (assuming you’re already watching Girls, The Mindy Show, etc). Revenge (stream on Netflix) silly, but well-done soap opera, and Emily is SO pretty. Kevin Bacon’s new show, the Following is very intense but good. Southland (cop-show) is really good if you haven’t seen it you can catch up and it starts again in Feb.. I have a two year-old so we rarely go out, and I also feel like we’ve seen it ALL.

Feel better! Your kitchen will look rad.

  11. Rosie says:

Can’t wait to hear tell of your fabulous plans.

Every time I see a picture of that golden kitchen, I swoon.

I only watch HGTV. It’s starting to drive me crazy. And Girls. Just getting into it. Hmmm…I don’t know what to suggest. My sister loves Archer…I think it’s on FX?

  12. Lucy says:

Try the new show Nashville. I have become hopelessly addicted.

  13. Justin says:

I really like the Victorian green house look in the second one. And as for TV, three words and one comma = Murder, She Wrote… assuming you have Netflix streaming.

  14. Bdeckba says:

Ooooooo. Sherlock is a great show if you haven’t watched already. There are only three episodes per season but they are quite long, sort of a miniseries I guess. Arrested development? You must have seen them all but if not……oooooooo.

  16. Jenny B says:

I second Sherlock above, but that won’t last you long. This sounds crazy, but my teenage son got the whole family into Prison Break, and it is HIGHLY addictive. We just finished it. When it was on the air I never watched it because I thought it looked and sounded so stupid, but now I realize I was the stupid one…

  17. Shay says:

Really cool designs! I like the modern feel on the 5th picture down

  18. Noel says:

I recommend The Tudors if you haven’t already watched it. You can stream it as a Hulu Plus member. Totally worth the price of a month’s subscription.

  19. ROK says:

Hmmm…if you haven’t watched Archer, you should. I think you’ll dig it. I’m still moving through Game of Thrones, which is addicting. But neither of them can be watched while children are awake. Seriously. On the G to PG ratings, I have been hitting Netflix documentaries pretty hard, and Upstairs Downstairs from 70s PBS. I did catch 1 hr of Bamazon….SURPRISINGLY not bad. That, Swamp People, and My Fair Wedding are all G-rated enough to watch while folding laundrey. When I had the flu a few weeks ago, I downloaded Million Dollar Decorators Season 2–short for $18, but enjoyable.

Bring on the wood kitchens…I assume I can afford a better painted cabinet experience, and we are all scarred by the overwhelming cherry and granite moneypits in new construction….but good wood must exist. It’ll be the next big thing :)

  20. Susan says:

Hey, #4 has your awesome chandelier so you’re already on your way to greatness. As for best picks, I am loving #1 and its beautiful blues.

  21. Erica W. says:

So sorry you’re all sick. While I was laid up on the couch for a week, I discovered Merlin (Seasons 1-4 on Hulu, then searched for pirated plays on web). OMG — Merlin and Arthur are the cutest, funniest, sweetest bromance couple ever. Also there’s this Stephen Fry show on Hulu called Kingdom — it’s so-so as a show, but there are some great interiors. Of course, who can tire of watching Dr. Who? Once Upon a Time is also cute and also on Hulu. I’m very much a G-rated TV viewer :) I’m checking out the restoration one The Misfit mentioned. Get well soon!

  22. Laura says:

    Great pendants in #1.

Things I have watched while sick: Weeds. Dr. Who. Burn Notice. The original (Swedish) Girl with the Dragon Tattoo movies. You know, Swedish is not so hard to understand when you are highly medicated.
