Hey guys, it’s been a while. So, guess what? Taking care of two kids is more than twice as hard as taking care of one. The baby never naps and Ike never slows down. Our living room is littered with more flotsam and jetsam than post Sandy NYC and the housekeeper just left a few hours ago. I am on my seventh load of laundry in three days because they baby won’t stop pooping and puking every time I consume the tiniest bit of hidden dairy products. Meanwhile Ike has been staging swift and furious rebel uprisings that would make Robert E Lee blush.

It’s a good thing (we think) our kids are cute.

Despite my exhaustion, I find time at 4am to buy things. It’s like the consumer center of my brain is on overdrive while everything else has shut down. So here I am, back at the blog doing what I do best: Waffling. Indeciding. Not listening to myself.

I need you to help me choose a rug for the nursery. Remember this?

Cute, but I feel like it needs another layer. Here are my top picks.

Option 1:

erin williamsonFrenchy. Neutral. Love the black border. But is it too stuffy for un petit bebe? And does it clash with American revolutionary drummer boy? You may remember him from Ike’s old nursery. But wait — might he be French, instead? It seems the French flag sports colors suspiciously close to those of America AND they also had revolutions and stuff. Copy cats.

Option 2:

I kind of swore I’d never do another black and white graphic rug after the zebra incident. And in fact the zebra is dying a slow, painful, toddler inflicted death in Karly’s nursery. But this… well, this is insane. And possibly amazing. And also possibly way overwhelming and disparate from the rest of our house. I do like the super neutral colors that would allow me to change up color schemes down the line.

Option 3:

Color commitment issues… I am having a phobic moment about choosing blue, but I like that this rug would probably hide the most dirt. Also, it’s cute for a baby boy and the rough border and abrash give it a handmade feel that would add that special je ne sais quoi to all the graphic elements in the room.

And those are my choices. All wool, all 8x10s, all under $300.

So please… vote. For my rug.

And for president, I guess.

  1. Jessica says:

Definitely the blue one! I say, if it hides dirt then that’s the way to go.

  2. Nick says:

BLUE! It contributes to an overall richer, more stable feel, compared to the other two, whose graphic-ness can make the room feel a little anxious—not at all what one would want for a nursery.

  3. anita says:

oooh, i love seeing a new d.c. post in my line up! ;)

#3 -the blue one is my vote!

  4. Alecia says:

    Blue one, for sure!

  5. Pieter says:

Does a South African vote count? I vote blue. I vote blue for everything. Please let it be blue, what happens in the U.S. impacts us all…yikes, sorry about going off on a tangent there…

  6. Great photo! You’ve got a good looking group there.

As spectacular as I think the second rug is, I also vote for the third. You’ve got enough going on without worrying about stains on your new rug.

  7. Sabrina says:

    Blue.

  8. Carol says:

…immediately loved the blue! surprising it’s so unanimous since they’re all great. I think it is apropos without being predictable.

  9. i am at my happiest in life when you are blogging. so please tie ike to the furniture and throw away the milk, butter and cheese.

this is tough…here’s where my thought process was while perusing the choices as they came to me..
    #1..like it.
    #2..like it better.
    #3…like it most.

i am feeling a mustard rug for some reason too as an option. think charlie brown’s shirt. maybe like this:

  10. Just found your amazing blog, love your style!! I like the second rug a lot but I think I love the third choice best.

  11. Brittany says:

I’m kind of really liking the French one…but it definitely has a stuffy/posh vibe. I really like the blue one too; I like the colour and if it hides the dirt, well thats a plus :)
Really though, any of the rugs will look awesome!

Love the site! Found from DM and I am always in a design crisis with these 4 little girls of ours. Take care!

  13. Carla says:

    Blue!!! Happy you’re back

  14. Colleen says:

Just found you over at Danielle Oakey’s blog…your home is gorgeous! I vote for the blue rug!

  15. Naomi says:

whoa im on the dinosaur desktop today and frenchy looks so much creamier than on my laptop. whats up lying monitors!? I still like it though.

I could see blue working but I probably wouldn’t do it in 8×10. Not that I know the size of your room, but for the blue, I’d want it to be more on an accent rug than room rug.

  16. Rosie says:

OK, I’m clearly in the minority here, but the maze rug is the one my eyeballs adore. It crackles and pops. It plays so nicely with the chair. Love, love, love.

And I voted. No lines! Paper ballots!

  17. ModFruGal says:

Welcome back! Love #2 best, but I’m a mom too, so my hunch is that #3 will probably serve your needs the best.

  18. Maida says:

I love your writing; totally honest, irreverent, and funny. Great to see a new post from you today. Oh, and I vote for the blue rug.

  19. Danielle says:

I am on team blue, so pretty! Also, I tried to email you yesterday but my email kept getting sent back to me! You are one talented lady and I am so glad to have found your blog! Love it.

  20. Claire says:

Ohmygosh. Rug number 2 makes me swoon! That said…I think it would stress me the heck out…there’s a lot of white area to dirty up…and black shows every little thing too. If you’re any bit of OCD, I’d go with #3. (:

  21. erin says:

You guys are SO AWESOME! Thank you for your votes and kind feedback! Keep the comments coming!

  22. Natalie says:

    Blue all the way!

  23. maison21 says:

black and white- it’s a kids room, have fun with it! not like you’ll be keeping the rug long anyway once it’s puke and playdoh encrusted. ;-)

  24. I’m going to vote blue. It’s a little oasis of calm for your baby. BTW, I saw a brass chest like yours at a local estate sale (Sarreid) for $185 and at the time didn’t have the funds make the purchase even though I had big love for it. It showed up on Craiglist for $500 the following week. What a bi-otch…

  25. Leah says:

i can only imagine how hard it is to two little guys, but they are so adorable! okay, on to decorating choices. i vote blue.

  26. Leah says:

ugh. not “to two,” rather, “to have two.” wish i could recall my post comments! also jenny’s mustard option might be cool.

  27. Dierdra says:

Blue! So far it looks like that’s the consensus. I’ll be curious to see which you choose! BTW, found you via danielle oakley. Love your home!

  28. the misfit says:

First of all, what a ridiculously cute family picture. No one would guess that you were living in a post-hurricane apocalypse if you didn’t tell :) .

Second – you and I (of course) hail from different styles, but I offer this thought. First I looked at the photo of Small Person #2′s room and thought, (1) did she show us this before? I only remember it in pieces (2) is my memory getting worse? I bet it is and (3) what is wrong with this room? Why would she want to change anything? Then I squinted at it and realized it was ALL neutrals and probably could use some color, so I thought I was about to embark on a selection of Oriental rugs. (Scroll down…)

So here is what I think. All the rugs you have suggested are nice and I think any of them would look good in the space. But they are all relatively low-color. The nursery is already low-color. You have a lot of great red-and-other-saturated-color Oriental rugs in your home already, so I’m not suggesting going back to that well, per se. But what about a multicolored rug with stronger colors? Something with a pattern, that would hide dirt.

    Just a thought.

  29. Blue. It offers you the opportunity to have high contrast toys on the floor for lil’ Luke’s mental development, and offers you a soothing back drop for late night (early morning) visits. I’m voting blue all day today.

  30. Ryan says:

I already dropped on my ballot, so I have time to consider rug choices too.
    #1 – meh
#2 – could be awesome, such big scale!
    #3 – Best choice

I love the subtle pattern on the blue rug and think it offers a better balance for the room. The black/tan rug might just be too much and leans more toward Versace. Where as the blue rug makes it the room Aunti Mame decorates for her nephew

  31. Tamara says:

Blue! Maybe I’m biased, considering the day…

By the way, it’s good to see a post!

  32. Rosan says:

    Blue!
It’s the only one that gives the room the look and feel of a nursery.. The other options would almost be too chique / grown-up.
BTW can we get the sources for these gorgeous rugs?

And thanks for posting! Love to read your blog and your mood boards always look so awesome!

  33. Nice to see you here again – dont feel guilty! we will take what we can!

So for important things like rugs, I like no 2 bestest in your pretty pic line up, but it would probably shit me to live with if I did so I vote Blue.
& I really hope that most of America votes blue too. Otherwise the rest of the world is going to hate you all.

Havent yet had any coffee today – so Im just going to hope I can get away with saying that!!! :)

  34. Not Auntie Tara :) says:

Definitely the blue! That was my first instinct, anyway. Though that second rug sure is purty…

  35. Wow, I’m the minority! ;) Liking number one the best but also Jenny’s mustardy option. Great family photo, too cute!!

  36. Katie Keith says:

I’m with the popular vote on this one – BLUE!

  37. Voted in the presidential thing-y last week, so this is my only vote for the day. Is it totally unanimous yet, because I too choose blue. It’s so vivid. Love it against the other neutral aspects. And how cute is that family photo in the back of the pick-up?? Such a good-looking bunch!! I’d never have guessed you’re lacking for sleep or sanity.

If you have a spare moment, please weigh in on my latest dilemma (although I’ve already pretty much decided I’m going to look at the Craigslist item anyway).

Take care of you and those beautiful boys!

  38. Lawny says:

So so pleased you are back, you make the world right. The family photo is stellar.

As for the rugs, I like #2 & #3 a lot! In my opinion I think #1 has the potential to look cheap.

  39. rok says:

41 comments already? Clearly it has been too long.

Blue. I think clearly superior for layering. And under $300 isn’t that serious a commitment. More like going steady until you sell it on Craigslist for a new hottie.

  40. I vote blue! I really like the french one too, but in that room, the blue would look really fantastic!

  41. I like # 2 black and white, but I love # 3 blue!

I’m looking for those exact curtains. Where did you find them?

  42. Rebecca says:

Yo yo yo! OK, I (like my bros above) am feeling the blue. May I also recommend Flor? Especially with the messiness of babies, it’s nice to have the ability to wash the squares easily. (We have it in Ari’s room.)

  43. Kathleen says:

I really like #2! I’m all about high contrast lately.

In other matters I voted BLUE and am on pins and needles watching results roll in this evening.

  44. Laura says:

#3. Too much going on with the other ones in that room.

  45. Mary says:

I vote for the blue rug. Where is it from????

  46. Matt says:

Erin, DARLING! The rug that is in that space is already totally fabu. It looks like a fluffy white cloud that is perfect for curling up on when the sun is coming through the windows and then sleeping like a kitty. But if you must, I think the blue cheapens that space. #2 is my pick.
