You dudes may remember the bedroom makeover I started a hundred million years several months ago.  Well, we were moving right along, then I got busy with work so the project got put to the side for a bit.  I’m ready to wrap it up now but I am at a MAJOR impasse:  I can not decide what to do with the walls.  I have one black wall, which I love, and the rest are white, also great.  So, what’s the problem?  I want to do something to the white walls to make them a bit more interesting and to make my headboard stand out.  Let’s start with a pic of the room now:

Sorry, I’m no Erin so the picture isn’t so great.  The curtains are going to be rehung a few inches higher, art and lighting are still being picked out, and I’m thinking of getting this rug for under the bed:

Yes, we have all seen this Ikea rug before.

I thought doing something simple like this on the walls would be good, but I’m not sure the headboard will stand out enough:

I don’t have to do a laser light show, I could vary the shape:

Or should I do something with subtle black lines to tie in the black wall?

I’m really open to any and all suggestions, even if you want to tell me to paint the whole thing kelly green (which I probably won’t do, but girl, I will listen!)

help!!!!!

I would get a bunch of sharp pencils and a few artistic friends and rip off one of Sol Lewitt’s wall drawings:

CRAZY! From day one I have thought that thin-lined hand drawn pictures would be perfect, I just wasn’t sure how to pull it off without spending a million years drawing it all out

What I would do is, since you like your white walls, just paint an accent piece behind your headboard, like the same shape as the headboard but bigger. For some reason the first color choice that popped into my head was hot pink, but I have no clue why as I would never do that and neither would you probably. You could always go with black, or maybe a nice cool blue?

    I vote http://www.amisuma.com/walls/ click on Pomme NYC…
Seriously though – you’ve got yourself in quite a pickle…I will try to help come up with a better idea?

While both ideas are great, Jesselyn’s sounds faster. You could do the same yellow you were planning for your bedroom door.

what about a simple vinyl cutout?

Welcome Carlos! For quite sometime I had considered knocking off the woman from room 206 in the link you sent. It’s still not off the table. How much do you LOVE hotel fox?!

  8. I vote yes on that rug. I like the idea of not necessarily a hot pink but another eye-pop color somewhere in the room. didn’t you just post about that in an all-white room? I know this room isn’t all white b/c of black accent wall but I think it would work well. Something in a bright color above the headboard.change the bedspread to all white is another idea.

  9. nope, I rethought it. how’s about a bright neon green bedspread to make the headboard pop? is this a really bad idea…I’m stream of consciousnessing here…

I like the idea of white on white…it gives a subtle contrast that won’t take away from the headboard or the black wall. the shape…i leave this up to you! It would allow for the art that is coming too…I have done stripes in the same color with matte and highgloss paint, and I could really work the lighting to my advantage. Sometimes you’d see the stripes, sometimes not!

What if the wall behind the bed were a medium gray? It would play well with its black and white friends. And then an eyeball-popping solid color fuscia or kelly green bed spread. I know the rug is a hit in blogland, but it’s a great one — love the stripes. Then, I’d have lucite or black bedside table. Glossy. And atop each I’d put matching oversized matte white ceramic vintage lamp with white shades with gold liners. This is fun!

Your headboard is fabulous, by the way! Where did you find it? LOVE it!

  13. heather says:

what about a bold cyan frame around the headboard?

or, a solid sky blue wall.

  14. karly says:

I love it everyone! keep it coming

PS, i also love my bedspread – that’s staying

Love the rug, who cares if everyone has it, it’s great. That headboard is divine and I like the black and white. I think something graphic and black and white on the walls behind the bed, then sprinkle in a bright color in your accessories. Maybe yellow. Oh, or maybe glossy yellow nightstands?

  16. First of all, I have that rug, love it and think everyone should have one. And don’t kill me but what if the wall behind the bed were black and the other one were white? That bed is kickass and a black wall would definitely set it off. And if the current black wall became white, I’d paint the fireplace either something bright or gray.

  17. Hmm I’m thinking about some kinda lazer light show kinda thing (& maybe in a gloss paint)& the starting point coming out from your bedhead – would certainly make it stand out! Also I think you need bedside lamps with black shades to bring the black wall in with everything else & a couple of hot pink plain scatter cushions to make the bedspread pop more! then all just gorgeous! & quite simple!

  18. Oh & then just a second thought – if you went for a little hot pink scatter cush – also could do a simple hot pink banding on the curtain to bring THAT all together too.
    ok.enough from me now!

  19. I pondered typing the same thing about switching the wall colors like right bank said. hard to make that headboard pop with white on white. and I like your bedspread too. just noticed how awesome the floors are.
another idea. what about doing just a block of the wall just even with the headboard, floor to ceiling the off white/or on either sides of each side of the headboard. take that picture into photoshop and experiment with that?

  20. karly says:

Awesome! Awesome! I have to admit that maybe now i have TOO MANY awesome things to think about. Don’t worry, I’ll decide and keep you all posted. Feel free to throw more ideas my way if you think of them

Also, I’m glad everyone likes the bed! My husband made the bed and I made the headboard. The bed itself is pretty awesome: it has a drawer on the side that houses a projector, our DVD player and our cable box, when we want to watch tv or movies, we open the drawer and project on the wall. When we’re done, we stash it all away where no one can see it.

The head board was made from thick plywood, rug foam and super high gloss white vinyl. I have instructions on how to make a similar headboard (the one i did for my guest room) here: http://design-crisis.com/?p=294

  21. Alison says:

Maybe a glossy/matte wite on white stripe pattern to mirror the glossiness of the (awesome)headboard and floors. It would also give you the effect of the rug. I would go with horizontal to avoid a circus-tent look. Your ceilings look pretty high too.

Have you thought about a big, old worn oriental rug? It would look great with that gilt mirror and really set off some of the more modern stuff you have, as well as adding some mellow color to the room.

  22. Hi,

I came across your blog while I was googling(aka stalking) one of my favorite designers, Joel Mozersky, and looking for ideas for our house remodel. Anyways, I think a black and white wallpaper would be really cool on your white walls…or even painting black and white stripes on your wall, like this? http://www.wallpapershop.com.au/store/image.php?type=T&id=159

I’m sorry, but what kind of plant do you have in your terrarium? I have a pencil cactus but I don’t want to promote UV damage to the plastic dome on mine.
