First of all, thank you SO MUCH for your kind and generous well wishes on yesterday’s post! While making babies is lots of fun, carrying them is… not so much fun. Thank you for filling the gaping void left by my good friends gin and tonic. Now I promised to get off my ass and play decorating party with you, so yesterday (in between American Pickers and Pawn Stars… I am obviously addicted to vicarious antiquing) I ordered a motherload of wallpaper samples.

I’m really digging this Abigail Edwards Seascape paper for the small but bright nursery, be it boy or girl:

For a boy I would paint the ceiling dark teal, for a girl I would use aubergine. White roman shades trimmed in matching cord, deco mahogany furniture, Ike’s old hot air balloon chandelier (see it and the furniture in Ike’s old room here), this chair reupholstered in warm charcoal (patterned?) velvet, and a few tiny persimmon accents. Bam! And that’s about all that tiny room can handle. Except for a baby. (please, jeebus, let it handle the baby!)

So here is my tentative nursery girl palette.

And the boy palette.

Plus there will be lots of gold and black and flame mahogany up in that joint.

ps: we painted our front room that teal color, but darker.

pps: planning to paint the master bedroom that aubergine color… but darker.

Thoughts? Concerns?

Am I already scarring the fetus for life by plotting such things?

The scarring has to start sometime.

Love that wallpaper. I was thinking of stenciling the wall behind our bed but maybe wallpaper would be a better way to go.

Congratulations! May your pregnancy be completely uneventful.

I LOVE both of these! I cannot wait to see you what you come up with for the nursery! We did gray for our first…we went with orange as a complement with navy/kelly green accents. We were going to do fuschia and gold with it if it was a girl. SO excited to see what you do!

Love it all. People think “boy” and “girl” are so far apart, style-wise, but I totally think one color can turn it. Well done.

I love the idea of a grown-up rocker in the baby’s room. Since the chair seems to have a sooooort of simple shape, maybe you could learn to upholster it yourself? You’re handy. Concededly, I can’t upholster, and although I FIRMLY intend to learn someday, I am presently maxed out on my capacity to learn new skills at the same time. ALSO: what about a slipcover? The chair is within the bounds of traditional shapes (not dissimilar in shape to a chair Ikea sells, so look there first?). Slipcovers are (comparatively) cheap and jelly comes out in the wash. And that postpones the fraught reupholstery question (though I love the fabric you chose).

One concern only: how is that color (but darker) going to work on all four walls of a large room? I’m sort of color wimp (for MY house) but love intense colors in OTHER people’s houses – but I am having trouble picturing this one. It looks VERY dark. Plus it has red undertones that will color all light – right? Do you have preview pictures/digital mockups? Please share.

Hmmmm… slipcover. Could be a good route.

As for the paint, it’s only for the ceiling in the nursery — the wallpaper goes on the walls. I am a little concerned about how low it may make the ceiling feel. It’s a small but bright room. We’ll see.

We did paint our small front room (study) super dark teal and I love it. Planning to post pics soon.

I am delirious over that wallpaper. And I also love that you have such a crystal clear vision of what you want here…both the teal and the aubergine are such sophisticated choices.

Sublime. Truly, sublime. And the chair = perfection.

  8. The baby will not be scarred, he/she will be uber hip. All the other babies will be jealous of how cool his/her nursery is. Love the colors! Hope you’re feeling okay. My first few months of each pregnancy were no fun. Best wishes to you on your decorating journey!

  9. Well that wallpaper sure is one way to sure up le/la bebes sea legs!

I love them both. What’s that aubergine color? I mean, I know it’s aubergine. But, like, what brand/color name? I love it. And might need it in my bedroom.
