Monday, I want to murder you. The time change sucks nuts when you have a kid, our dishwasher is still broken, and I can’t for the life of me find the nail clippers. Seriously, how long does it take after moving to get all the odds and ends properly squared away? Last night I had to dig through boxes in the garage just to find my house shoes. I love me some isotoners — what about it? And to top it off, I am getting some weird blog crap when I log in while using Firefox. Has anyone out there noticed any funny business whilst cruising our blog?
Moving on, I’d like to say thanks for all your input about the fireplace. Right now I’m contemplating ripping half of it down (well not me personally, me = proxy = Matt), adding a proper mantle, and painting it white. Or maybe doing this here plaster job that Morgan left in the comments. I’m a little concerned that our floors are too rustic to do anything vaguely rustic with the brick… not that they are crazy rustic they just have a very Euro bare board look, knots and all.

Speaking of, I have found myself staring at the floors and wondering if I should have done this pickled finish instead:

No, right? I would hate it in five years, right????? Please say yes.
I have turned into a babbling idiot because I have too many decisions to make, mainly about the overall direction of this place. I think it boils down to this:

vs this:

Form driven modernist Stilnovo, or a more classically elegant deco look?
I think I have a preference, but I’d love to know what you think.

I’m getting a weird log in pop up, but it doesn’t affect anything after I close it. I love the the second lighting choice, I feel like I haven’t seen it as much.
I also get a pop-up: Connect to ideastosteal.com.
I am a giant sucker for deco, so I vote deco. Love that chandelier!
(PS: The rainbow Stilnovo went for a song, in case you weren’t watching or didn’t bid).
I forgot to bid, mostly because I just didn’t have ants in my pants over that fixture. Just having some difficulty pulling the trigger on anything right now. Analysis paralysis!
Oh, and when I tried to click on the plaster link, it gave me a tsk sound accompanied by a yellow box with an exclamation point.
I know the feeling!
Weird, the link works for me… is it broken for anyone else?
Hello long lost blog twinsie. My my I have a lot to catch up on. Love that plaster-brick BDDW fireplace. That doesn’t seem too rustic to me. Nor does just plain white brick.
Just say NO to pickling. Too trendy. At least you can paint over pickled cabinets, but pickled floors are a bigger commitment.
I like lighting fixture numero uno. I see it mixed with rustic and modern stuff. Where is this bad boy going?
I am 100% on board with everything Naomi said. Yuck no pickling and hooray light fixture #1: Far more interesting
my laundry list:
- ideatosteal popup
- no problem with plaster link
- love plastered fireplace idea
- like fixture #1
- no to pickling
I got the pop-up, too. Hope that’s nothing sinister.
Skip the pickled floors — love the floors you’re with!
Neither of the light fixtures float my boat.
A few years ago, I had a dreadful plaster experience that was tied in with the humidity in this part of Texas. Maybe there are nifty, new protective additives these days?
I think a nice paint job would be great for your fireplace — though I’d go for a fantastic mosaic or tile treatment, ’cause that’s how I roll!
Final thought — thanks for mentioning the time change in your opening paragraph. Apparently, that slipped by me.
I also get the sign-in ideastosteal popup. Is that some domain you actually work with (they provide your template or something), or are they entirely foreign to you? ‘Cause the latter seems concerning to me, but what do I know about computers?
I am torn on the lamp question. The top one is more attractive to me as an item, but I think I would probably like the deco style more in general.
I’m more of a historic/traditional gal than an eclectic/transitional, so I lack your skills for mixing eras, but I have a foundational question: how are you planning to deal with the era of the house? From what I have seen so far, it seems like a ’70s build with a late ’90s-early ’00s space planning sensibility (two story great room, for example) and an exterior that hearkens to the ’30s Tudor re-revival (which I’m not seeing on the inside anywhere – removed in an earlier remodel??). How do you address all that and bring in a new era(s) for your furnishings? Go for a plurality rule? Ignore the house’s (somewhat varied) stylistic antecedents?
I am intrigued.
Yeah, I don’t know what’s going on with the pop up. Our blog guru is working on it now…
Misfit, that is the question. I’m ignoring the 70s aspect since I don’t think it has much to do with the style (although I do have some 70s furniture). I’m trying to maximize the space, also trying to minimize the McMansiony aspects. The Tudor thing is an issue. Think I may do a weird Acid Wasp mix… I have a few traditionalish wallpapers picked out, for example. I’d like to give a nod to the 30s sensibility, but I may go more Moderne than Nouveau, if you know what I mean.
Ok, that was a lot of rambling nonsense, but maybe there is something in there if you squint real hard and try to see it.
Love your current floors (the other version is a bit too knotty pine for my taste). As for lamps, I vote “Form driven modernist Stilnovo”. I’m not a fan of the two tone vibes, but all black = yummers! I think you need something more sculptural (the bigger the better). Heck, with your living ceiling height, you can get a Calder mobile. That deco thing is just so safe, predictable, found-it-in-a-box-with-some-other-household-goods-bought-for-$5-at-a-yard-sale.
I vote #1 modernist light fitting.
#2 reminds me a bit of a grannies panties light. I love me some deco. but this one doesnt float my boat.
As for the floors – dont second guess yourself. thats how you drive yourself crazy lady!
