Wouldn’t it be nice if I actually bought something instead of just talking about buying something? Well, today is my birthday and I think I’m going to spend that capital on a fancy new bed. I’m currently agonizing over two options, and I know you fine people will happily tell me what to do. Let’s check out the playas:

I know I know, the styling and photography make me want to claw my eyes out, too. But this sucker is only $255 for a king from Overstock. I have black nightstands so I would definitely go with the black frame. It’s only 11 inches high which is ok, but it could be lower… maybe I could saw the legs off? I’m also worried about the corners jabbing my shins in the middle of the night.

Then there’s this guy from West Elm (thanks for the tip from kind commenter DMS). I love the proportions, and it’s only a shade over nine inches high, which is perfect. But it’s $400 (plus shipping and tax), and I’m not sure how I feel about the white with my black furniture…

You can kind of see my nightstands in this ugly picture I took for craigslist when I posted our bed for sale.

So, what do you guys think? Black or white? Or something else? I’m open to anything cheap and low slung platformy. Headboards need not apply because I think once lowered the bed will sit just beneath window. Then I can switch out the curtains for some roman shades and this room will be done. Hooray!

But first I need to choose a bed. Help.

How tall are your night stands? I’d worry about them being higher than the bed.

I’d go with the cheaper option from Overstock. You can do a lot with such a simple platform. Cut down the legs, add square brass caps to fit over the feet like these http://www.whitechapel-ltd.com/product/stoecaps/258CAP57P.html . Or not.

The West Elm version is a bit chunky and showy for something that doesn’t have a whole lot to be proud of. Overscaled and mass-produced furniture like that makes my eyeballs roll. I have nothing against mass-produced furniture, I’d just prefer it not come with an over-inflated ego. Does that make sense?

Good luck with all of this. I’m still waiting for photos of the rug in the dining room, though…

  2. Happy, happy birthday! :-)

I like the Overstock bed, though I’m with Tandy on checking the height of your nightstands. But, I just can’t live without a headboard.

The garden-lattice-type white bed makes my teeth ache.

Your current headboard . . . wish I could steal that. Awesome character, but I’d reupholster that bad boy in deep, brown leather. Yum!

Yea do the overstock one, the west elm one makes me sad. Black works, or you could even paint it. I forget what else is going on in the room, but something like a red or malachite-green base could be a fun pop… if you were wanting a pop. Otherwise, black.

I’m thinking about picking up a Malm bed off craigslist since the commenters on your last post said having a mattress on the floor is unsanitary. Last thing I need is another thing that could be making me sick!

ps- Happy Birthday again! (In case you missed my creative birthday message on facebook.)

Hi Erin and Happy Birthday to you.
DON’T RUSH INTO ANYTHING! You can do better than these! The overstock beds only look ok because they have purpose designed bed covers but once you have your own stuff on them, you will be forever rearranging trying to make them look like something else. They’re like the ubiquitous overstuffed, huge but cheap sofa, wrong proportions for the individual design afficionado and no class! Don’t do it…. please….

I like the Overstock. It would never occur to me to check nightstand height – I have no spatial intelligence. That said, I agree with Jenny that the bedding makes it look extra good. THAT said – you can rock anything!

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

If I HAD to, I would go for the black one from Overstock, but if you don’t love either don’t bother. Why not get a custom-made box base, (you can even upholster it so you don’t knock your shins) and then add a bed skirt? I love skirts, but nice tailored ones with straight edges, not frilly ones. Unfortunately I don’t have the legs for them.

  7. Amy says:

Don’t get the Overstock one. I had a dream last night that I hit my shin on a bed post finial and I have NEVER had a bed with posts so therefore this is a cosmic sign and you should not get it. Just put yo mattress on the floor! (Unless you want storage or like, distance from bugs).

  8. Ron says:

Since you want it low and you probably won’t see the frame after the bed linens, why not just go with a standard hollywood style metal frame. Here is one from overstock for 80 dollars:

Put your box springs on, throw on a bedskirt and be done with it.

  9. Happy B-Day Boo!

I’d say take the black platform plunge.
It’s way louche and at that price, a totally sensible purchase.
    Sweet dreams!
    Cheers, Alcira

  10. I vote the overstock black bed. Just chop the legs down if you need to. I think the white bed looks cheap & nasty & despite all your styling cleverness it would always look cheap & nasty.
these are my thoughts – which today are a bit grumpy!

OMG, I missed your birthday! I’m so sorry…happy belated birthday, I hope your crew spoiled you rotten!!!

As for the beds, don’t hate me, but these are not you. I know you can find something fabulous if you remain vigilant.

    p.s.-I loved your bed. Sniff.

The second one is pretty great, but you would have to paint it black, I know it’s a huge amount to spend only to need to work on it, I think it could be really beautiful

  15. Sarah says:

Love the chunky look of the white bed – and the bed linens would cushion against bruised shin probs!
