Our bed keeps getting bigger, and something must be done about it. We upgraded to a pillow top king years ago and it was a life changing decision, but I wasn’t prepared for the rather epic proportions of our new purchase. I got over it. More recently we purchased a giant gel foam mattress topper, and it’s getting princess and the pea comical up in here… pretty soon I’ll be able to touch the ceiling while laying supine. I mean, the bed is so big I think it may go supernova on us. Critical mass time, dudes. What do we do?

So, I’m thinking the answer might be to put our bed on the floor. I just ordered yet another rug from ebay (rugaholics anonymous), and I be loving it. Except that the bed looks kind of like a houseboat floating adrift on the Persian Sea. Let us consider this conundrum and look at some options.

I don’t actually know if this bed is on the floor, but it may as well be.

I’ve long since given up on the idea of a headboard. Screw it.

It’s just going to be me and the bed. Oh, and Better Half Ben.

So what do we think? Should I pop that puppy off the supposedly low profile box springs and hunker down even lower?
Or is that look too dormy? Maybe I should get a platform?
Like, a 6″ tall platform?

We have tall bed action happening here too. Plus no headboard. Plus a horrible master bedroom crammed with man-stuff that I’ve moved from every other part of our house. The room really looks comical. And depressing. So take my advice with a grain of salt… But I think a low platform would be best. Love the photos here that have hanging lights on either side of the bed. Looks so balanced and beautiful.
A platform seems like a great option…seems a little more polished than flooring it.
If you can’t swing your legs over and sit on the edge of your bed like a chair you are too low.
Don’t turn every morning into the zombie scene from Thriller.
We have a king Case Study bed in walnut from Modernica.net and LOVE it. Low profile, solid, and classic.

G-Rock, that’s a good measurement. Right now my feet dangle about 8000 inches above the floor, but I am very short.
Ok, so a platform is a great option, but it has to be reallly low. Lower than 13,” which is how high our mattress sits on a metal frame + box springs.
Any ideas?
ps: love the Modernica bed, but I be cheap.
I’m all for having the bed flat on the floor. Maybe that’s because that’s how mine is. I think it’s unpretentious and inviting. My only issue is how to dress up the box spring. All of your pictures features bedspreads that graze the floor. Love this look, but mine isn’t that big. Maybe go for a king bedspread for my queen mattress? Not sure what you would do then…
Do I have to use the box spring if I just put the mattress on the floor?
And I really wish someone would make ginormous coverlets for king beds… someone could make a fortune on etsy sewing cool mega bedspreads.
Ha! I can relate…we are on the floor with box springs because a frame makes us too high, and a platform too low…with the springs on the floor we are the perfect height…BUT we are a bed on the floor. We have plans to build a faux bed where we cover the BS with a wood surround so that it looks like a real bed, but doesn’t change our ideal height scenario.
I have always heard that you should never put your bed right on the floor without raising it up at least a few inches because air needs to circulate so that nastiness doesn’t happen underneath and then all through it. Especially with what sounds like a pretty major mattress in your case (just think human bodies, heat, moisture, etc. if you get my drift). But I love the idea of a platform, even if you create something out of the metal frame, ikea platform that lets you not use a box spring, and maybe upholstered bed frame around it (easy, out of wood like 1 x 10′s, batting and fabric just screwed together like a box around the metal frame which is put on those riser things to raise the bed to the height you want). I just came up with this idea right now while thinking about this but it sounds doable?!
Is there any advantage to having a box spring? I often wonder this while I look at lovely platform beds…
Do box springs offer some sort of protection? I do not know.
Anyway, all of those pics look pretty great to me. I think you’d get your desired mega coverlet effect if you skipped the box spring (whoa, just realized it can be shortened to BS—that’s a sign, right?) and frame. Problems: I solve them.
My sister has one of those platform beds – but low and spread right out…being a queen size bed + a single so its a ‘family sleeping platform’ for her, her baby daddy & 2 kids.
I dont get it.
Well, if you can make it look like the first or second images, I say heck yes! Those are some mighty sexy bedrooms!
I think that with the exception of the last photo, none of these look like they’re really on the floor — they’re just low beds.
I actually sleep with my bed on the floor, and I kind of feel like I’ve outgrown it at this point. But then again, I do so because I’m living in a small space (it’s a roll-out). I think the “bohemian low bed look”s you’ve collected here seems to work best in vast and lofty rooms.
I was just screaming about this yesterday. Why do we need these super-sized mattresses? You are so right about the princess and a pea feeling. I have the cheapest, thinest box spring to try to minimize the height. I’m just wondering if a box spring is needed at all with these mattresses?
Hey Jenny, you may be a genius!
Take a look at the platform beds/headboards at Serena and Lily and Jonathan Adler. They have some great upholstered headboards/platforms w/ great lines and nailheads.
Bed on the floor=dirty. Sounds okay in theory, but we are in Texas, think of one of those ugly roaches getting in your house and very easily crawling onto your bed, and on you as you sleep, eeek!! I have used one of Westelm’s platforms before, the Chunky one is 9″ high and still substantial. I have even refinished them before if you want to “up” it, or keep it simple. You could always just get a simple headboard there, but with your creativity you could probably make out if you have the patience to do it right, I think nothing worst than a homemade headboard that looks “homemade.” Also I have fabricated and upholstered a bed platform frame before, sounds a little easier said than done, just because the upholstery has to be done EXTREMELY well, you’d be surprised at how much the platform of a bed gets beat up and pulled between feet, covers, mattress…it has to be upholstered with the care and quality like a sofa, otherwise looks ratty soon (trust me!)

Low beds can be great, but as we age (I admit it) it is nice to be able to sit comfortably on the edge. Although I have a loft location that these type of designs are the best!
