After all the hemming and hawing and threatening and waffling I’ve been doing recently, I finally bought something that cost more than $2 at the thrift store — a new rug. Well, a really-old-but-new-to-me-rug. Mostly this happened because Karly is buying a new rug. In my infinite kindness and generosity, I started “helping” her look at rugs, which actually entailed very little other than selfishly hoarding rugs in my Ebay bid basket.

After enduring a day of no sleep cranky toddler, I became fed up with whining in general (mine included) and I pulled the trigger. This all occurred while riding home with an overly full stomach after a very delicious gumbo dinner, so it is possible my brain was destroyed by an overabundance of impatience, salt and sassafrass, but I don’t think so. Let’s check out the goods.

malayer rug

Oh, I really really hope I like it! You never know with these crazy Ebay rugs, and this one is antique with some funky abrash issues:

Plus I really hope the color is ok. The listing says it’s rust, which should jibe with this painting:

But if that rug is actually salmon, I am skrewed. I also hope the fancy new-old rug will be ok with our couch, because if it’s not then I will just have to buy another couch.

pace chrome glass table

I’m also also thinking about switching our marble coffee table out for this Pace table that I bought 8 million years ago (you can read all about that crazy saga here), but I’m worried the chrome will make all the brass look weird… I guess I’ll just have to buy new lamps, too.

And this, my friends, is how I will end up living a life of poverty. Damn, you decorating domino effect.

yippee I’m so sickly happy about your rug purchase! I hope it works out. If not, does the vendor you bought from allow returns? I’ve returned more than one rug on ebay.

PS- I think the Pace table could work, but maybe you want to move Brian to another surface.

  2. erin says:

Yes, Brian will be moving, and the red chair doesn’t really live there. I think the table will be ok, just not sure about anything else…

They do allow returns, but what about return shipping?

  3. Love it!

I would’ve snatched that rug up in a minute!
It’s bound to look great and if for whatever reason it doesn’t work out in there, it’s a classic and could live anywhere.
Love the Pace table as well — never fear the mixing of metals. That’s what nature intended after all.

Looks like a winner…and I agree with the ladies…mix the metals and move Brian!

    Love the rug!

  6. OH! you should sell me your arch lamp. I mean, you need new chrome lamps for your table. yes, that’s it.

  7. also, your new rug makes my new rug look like boring nap time.

  8. love the rug – it will look fab! love your pillows – i have the same ones. and pleeeease rock that old coffee table!! it’s amazing. and it will get along with the brass just fine. unless you really need new lamps….a girl always needs new lamps :)

  9. Rebecca says:

I will fight Karly for the arc lamp. The new rug makes me green (red? salmon? orange?) with envy. Keep us posted!

  10. Cassie says:

The rug looks beautiful. Keep us posted!

  11. I am continually (or is it continuously?) impressed by your daring in your design aesthetic. There’s passion in both of those pieces, passion that will undoubtedly work when they get together. I can’t wait to see how you doctor it up. It’s gonna be another one of those spaces I drool over, and wake up in the night thinking about.

  12. Heather says:

Love the rug. It will be fab with the couch! And I love the idea of the coffee table since you could see more of the rug’s pattern through the glass. I almost bought this coffee table with brass, not chrome–that would have solved your problem, huh?

Congrats on pulling the trigger. I know the cycle of wanting/seeing/not buying/repeat, and making a decision gets you out of it. So congrats on that.

Love the rug! Love the coffee table! Love your digs! I don’t think your brass bits with the chrome is a prob, but I think the textures of the polished brass sculpture and the glass are too matchy-matchy and don’t work one on top o’ the other.

  14. I also bought a new rug & I am ignoring clients today as I am waiting for the delivery man to bring it!

By the way Im loving your living room! Its got soul & character. But that’s not a nice way of saying I don’t like it! Its got BOTH those things AND looks great!! But i want you to keep the marble coffee table you have!
And i want a close up look at the painting please!

  15. The rug is gorgeous! But I want to STEAL that coffee table. $75, I would keel over…I’ve been looking for that exact one, after spying on 1st Dibs. Shipping to Canada though is a huge stumbling block.

I actually love brass and chrome together. My new Jonathan Adler dining table’s base is exactly that. I posted pics on my blog last week.

    Adore your style!

  16. Another cheer for the fab rug! I have got to look on ebay for rugs but there are too many! You got skillz.

Great rug, I never seem to be able to commit to actually buying rugs on eBay but spend hrs searching just to get cold feet. I’m having a small design crisis of my own, I love your blog and would be so grateful for ur advise, I have an old teak dresser, that used to be my grandpas so it’s sentimental for me, I’ve been looking at some vintage ceramic vases on eBay, but am looking for some display inspiration for how to show them. Any thoughts?

  18. nkp says:

I LOVE your new rug. It’s beautiful and I can’t wait to see it in situ. I think either one of your tables will work fabulously.

Blame it on the gumbo, sounds perfectly rational to me. :0)

  19. OMFG I HAVE TO WRITE IN ALL CAPS BECAUASE THAT RUG IS AMAZINGGGGGGGGGG. AND THE COFFEE TABLE YESSSSSSSSSS. SO GOOD. It will totally work with the sofa and even the lamp. But the small brass table with the plant not so much. And I love the prancing deer, but that might not work with the coffee table either, but put it somewhere like the dining table instead, because I love a good prancing brass animal and it cannot go into a closet. Put caramel-colored things on the coffee table like books or pots to move some of the brass/sofa colors to the table. There. done and done. hahaha.

I have to go rug shopping now.

If it’s too salmon I’ll buy it from you :) for real. I’ll put it in the shop.
