I get so bored with picture after picture of beautifully styled, perfectly inhabitable, regular old rooms. That’s why lately I’ve found myself branching out little by little, creeping at the fringes of bizarre traditional decor. Am I rushing to cover my walls in acres of toile? Not yet… although if I had a paying client you can bet I might try to convince them to do it. Just look how cozy this David Netto room is (my fave part is the tripod and camera in the mirror… is that a Hassy?).

But honestly, I like toile when it gets weirder.

This room swathed in Manuel Canovas fabrics is totally the neotrad version of the nutty Danish modern camouflage room I posted Friday. John Boehner and his orange fauxtan are probably hiding in there somewhere.

Ok, so maybe this is a little too weird, like grandma stopped taking her meds again. But there are some amazing details in here. Hello, swan bed!

Now this is good. For the moment let’s gloss over the fact that if I found myself in this room, I might be afraid to touch anything lest I besmirch those very expensive fabrics with my proletarian fingers. Would I change a few details about the decor? Mos def. For starters I’d add this:

Hendrik Kerstens knows it’s better to take tradition with a dose of humor.

  1. Howdy,

I am so relieved I’m not the only one who is certifiably insane.
I’ve missed you blizzy-blog much since my weeklong hiatus and just spent the better part of 10 minutes perusing your latest ‘chives — loved the Round Top action.
Oh, yeah, and yes, you should definitely drop a mint on that crazy red and gold hunk of coffee table goodness.
Also, loving the Hendrik Kerstens riff on the great masters.
That was vaguely the sort of irreverence I was going for on a much cheaper level when I snagged Cate Blanchett vamping in the first Elizabeth poster.

That portrait is pure cheeky awesomeness.

I find the first room wonderfully appealing, it’s like the storm clouds are rolling in. As for orange, you know orange and I are forever pals.

I love that toile wallpaper by I can not for the-life-of-me-remember-who, the one where he embroiders the figures and scenes in rainbow-colored thread. Shit. Do you know who I’m talking about. I just saw in in New Orleans a few months ago!

  3. I don’t think the David Netto room is bizarre at all, though the two below it most definitely. The red one especially….way too much contrast between the patterns.

I am on Team Toile. I fear that a childhood spent perusing Laura Ashley decorating books means that wallpaper and matching upholstery is my dream. TMI?

Laughed out loud at the portrait…Vermeerish? HILARIOUS. Those rooms all make me jumpy, something has happened to my nervous system around walls with tons of pattern….Netto’s is best for me because it’s up top only…but still.

  6. Heck, at least its something different to look at it.

Perhaps a bit too far though.

Oh, and I’ve been given free reign to Nana’s vast collection of 60′s tablecloths. So you may see some crazy-genius-make-your-eyes bleed pattern mixing coming from me soon.

Naomi, as always you are my thought twin. I really just need some new visual inspiration, and now I have my fingers crossed that you are about to kick in at the clutch with Nana’s fabulous fabrics! Can’t wait to see what craziness you come up with…

I’m totally on board with all of those rooms until I look up and see — wait for it — a white ceiling. It’s like wearing a suit with white tube socks (as I’m wont to say). They look so unfinished and just plain wrong. Note how much better swanny-red-rocker room looks with its papered ceiling.

At least paint the ceiling black or stencil monkeys onto it or something, but leaving the ceiling white in a done-up-to-the-nines room should be punishable by home invasion and stealth papering.

I have a serious weakness for toile, so I enjoyed this post.

  10. Love it! What an inspired blog you have! I am glad to know I am not the only one super obsessed with wallpaper- have you seen pics of Chloe Sevigny’s NYC apt? To. Die. For. I have some pics on my blog too- you should check it out. Imperial Trellis in green. Amazeballs. Great blog- look forward to following it!

Hi Layne, thanks for stopping by! I have seen her apartment — it may mark the beginning of my current love affair with green. It’s a pretty fab pad. Thanks for sharing!
