I’ve kind of always wanted a crazy, patterned couch in colors that would make grandma blush. But would today’s favored pattern become tomorrow’s mauve and teal flamestitch? Oh wait… that’s coming back, right?

Hot damn, not bad. I think I’d even like it in teal.

Anyway, what do we think? Balls out, all over upholstery, like only Miles Redd can bring it:

Or could we cheat a bit and maybe just tuck a blanket into the seat cushion to create some interest:

Can I tell you how much I love everything in this picture? Love. This is my Acid Wasp wet dream.

I may or may not be obsessed with contrasting patterns. Am I? Do you feel the need to save me from myself, or to egg me on?

So is the blanket thing too messy? Or is it ever worth the splurge to just upholster the whole couch in a pattern? I’m a little scared things could veer into Buatta territory. And expensive, I-redecorate-every-five-minutes territory. Still, wouldn’t it be fun to do it up righteous?

Can you tell I’m super sick of having leather couches???

Happy Monday, folks. It’s going to be a good week. Or else.

Flamestitch? Yes, please. Bargello is classic, works as well with my mom’s Early-American as it will in my eclectic industrial/colonial/waspy/MCM digs (as soon I convince her to give me the damn sofa).

The blanket over cushions? No. Looks like you’re hiding some major damage or trying to keep your dog from shedding on the upholstery. Eew.

  2. I think you’d get sick of it and want to tear your eyeballs out after awhile. Stay neutral and keep thrifting fabulous pieces of art.

    How ’bout a chair instead?

  3. Pieter says:

I’m not a fan of using a blanket, it’s cowardly. Live on the edge and commit to a pattern. Using a blanket is like having an accent wall (don’t get me started). Stuff the trends, I dare you to go all bat-shit-Kelly-Wearstler-crazy and molest a sofa with some crazy geometric prints. You can also paint your own fabric—I’m considering doing the same.

Hot damn. That chair is crazy good…gorgeous shape and amazing fabric. I am pretty fearless when it comes to decorating and I would absolutely have a patterned couch. I love pattern upon pattern upon pattern.

As for flamestitch. Absolutely! I have two oversize flamestitch patterned pillows on our leather sectional. In kind of muted granny/ Miami condo tones and I luv ‘em.

  5. I would never ever ever EVER tire of the green sofa fabric in the Miles Redd room. Ever.

I say yes, but keep in mind that I love chintz. Don’t judge.

I am 1000% with you on the flamejob: I say go all the way. I recently lost this auction, and I’m still depressed about it.

    Yes!
    I say yes; do it.

  9. Dude,

I can’t even post a comment I’m laughing so hard right now!
You’re rearing to go this week — Erin’s mojo is back, people!
Um, I’m trying to formulate a comment/opinion re the couch quandary, but like I says, I can’t get past your hilarity long enough to straighten out my thought process.
    Hugs, Alcira

BTW, you sound a bit like my kiddo, who had to pop an oral steroid this morning to combat a heinous case of allergies. He’s been wired and bouncing off the wall sall day. You sure you’re not medicated? ;)

Pieter, you had me at molest…

Y’all, I am coming off a long month of guests and depressing house shopping. Thrifting has lifted my spirits to cumulo-nimbus-stratus like heights, but I may have gone overboard. Stay tuned to see what the hell the cat (that would be me) has dragged in.

    ps: Rosie, I say goddamn!

  12. maison21 says:

    do it!

i’d normally advise a client to do a solid sofa, and we’d dress it up with all kinds of fabulous pillows, but you, my dear, i’d advise to go for pattern on pattern- you have the taste and adventure level to handle it, and frankly, i think you’d be bored with a big old beige sofa.

so i’m eggin’ you on! get wild!

  13. humdrum says:

How about just having the cushions recovered in a wild print. Throw two big feather pillows of the same pattern on it. Problem solved, you get both solid and pattern, no need to choose.

  14. dina says:

Any confrontation with mint-green ruffled curtains (worse: “sheers”) loosens your grip on reality and drags down your IQ to the point where you are incompetent to judge patterned couches. Take a sudafed mixed with whatever it takes to get you back to your senses. Then rethink the whole thing. With all due respect.
