So now that I have a fantasy house to help decorate, I’ve been busy as a bee collecting inspiration pictures and ideas for The Inlaws. Priority #1 is a complete kitchen overhaul, and I’m sure we’ll discuss that ad nauseum later. For now I am preoccupying myself with determining an overall color palette for their house my vacation getaway. The space is not ginormous, but the ceilings are super high, it has tons of windows and it gets a lot of light. The floors are warm polished marble, like so:

The current neutral running throughout the house is not horrible, but it’s a little too yellow (more yellow than this picture). The aqua walls have to go — too cold and contemporary. The Inlaws have employed fairly traditional decor in the past, and I feel like my task will be to ever so gently nudge them toward clean lines with casual finishes. I’m headed for slightly more modern but still very comfortable (and hopefully with a splash of drama), as befits a super radical 70′s pool house. They seem willing to go to there.

With that in mind, I’d like to solicit your ideas for the perfect white. The ideal candidate would stand 6’2″, do dishes, and be sexy as hell. Or, you know, just look great on the walls. I have some ideas of my own, but I’d love to hear yours.

Help me out, peeps. Nothing too clinical or super ultra light. Something versatile and welcoming.

And… go!

  1. So, how did I miss that this home was for the inlaws not you?!
In any case, pimping it out will be good clean fun.
We have a Behr white on our walls that the builder originally used and we liked it so much we had matched when we repainted a few months ago.
Can’t remember the name for the life of me, but I’d adventure to say your dandy painting peep (whose name evades me right now) will be able to hook you up with just the right shade.
Offhand I’d say not too white and not too creamy and you should be good to go.

What we used throughout the main rooms was Porter’s White Umber..has a hint of warmth to it so as not to be super bright. Don’t know if it’s still too white for their pad, but we’ve thought it struck the right balance for our 70′s pad.

Depending on the color of the marble floors, you might want to go a smidge warmer or cooler (I can’t tell if they read more pink or more yellow). Of course, the only way for me to truly help you is to show up on your doorstep and assist in person, right?

  6. I arrived at Benjamin Moore’s Simply White in Aura (aka Affinity) for my office. It’s not too cool, but it’s not yellowy at all. I think there’s one called Gardenia that’s pretty nice, too. Just a hint of softness, really.

Anna, Moonlight White is on the list. I think Simply White will be too white for them (although I can report that it is fabulous in Karly’s office). I’m looking for a white with a bit of something to it… not quite a blank canvas.

We have a Dulux colour here in Australia called “Antique White USA”. It is the most stunning white I have ever found. Warmth without yellowness. Clarity without looking blue.

    Thanks and welcome, Alison!

We’re hoping to create a blank, white slate in our new-home-to-be as well before we move in (it’s currently in those hunter greens and burgundy’s that ruled the early 90′s), so this post is perfect for me. I’ll be checking out all of these whites. Thanks!
