Matt and I are finally going to break ground on our bedroom this weekend, which has me frantically sifting through my magazines and bookmarks fueling up with last minute inspiration.  While I am dying for a large-scale piece of original art, my bank account looks at me with a big frown and says:  yeah right.

Thank god I have a projector that hooks up to my computer.  With this fancy device and my two-can-of-paint-budget, I can easily knockoff duplicate almost any one-color wall mural.  A few of the following are vying for my attention:

Room 206, Hotel Fox, by WK Interact

This beauty has been siren-songing my name for a while.  Matt likes her too (of course) but Erin says it will look like a big porn threw up on my wall – or something to that effect.  I wouldn’t copy her exactly, but I am taken by the stark black and white of this room.

The Hotel Fox boasts several other murals, none of which are right for my room, but they are fun to look at nonetheless:

Room 106, Hotel Fox, by Geneviève Gauckler

GRRRRR, I steal children’s souls while they sleep!!!

Note to self:  put this in your baby’s room

I was really in love with the porn lady until I got wind of this kitty cat:

Larry the Cat at Portland, Oregon’s Ace Hotel

Yes, I have written about Larry before, but really, can anyone ever get enough of this lovely feline?  I didn’t think so.  Seems as though my love for animal decor will never die.

Specifically, my Love for Horses in Houses, yum:

Studio Ilse

I really really really want my entire house to be horse themed.  Horse couches, horse art, horse murals, horse dishes.  I mean seriously horse themed.  Screw one wall covered in horse art, I’t talking top-to-bottom.  How’s that for en masse?  I think I just felt a tear rolling down my cheak.

If I can’t have wall-to-wall horses, pictures of people I don’t know will work as well:

Hotel Particulier, room by Natacha Lesueur

The wall behind my bed is about 3 times the size of this one with the photos, so if I can score 6 giant head prints, then I’ll be in business.

It seems as though I’m running to catch up with the band-wagon, as giant heads are all the rage:

More big heads:

And just to drive the point home:

Perhaps the heads are too much for you and you’d prefer to zero-in on the window to the soul:

Offices of Neogamma / BBH, via This Ain’t No Disco

This mural in the offices of Neogamma BBH is certainly swoonworthy.  The fact that they have a second proves that these dudes know how to party:

I’m pretty sure they were able to zero-in on exactly what sheeps think about: “blurb. color. exclamation mark. splash.”  sort of like me when I write blog posts.

In other animal mural news (I told you I couldn’t get enough):

Unknown from Digital Picaso’s flickr photostream

I never thought I’d say this but, that tromp i’oil chandelier is almost overshadowing those lovely animals.

If, like me, you’re diggin the faux furniture wall mural, and would like to leave the artwork creation to those who actually know what they’re doing, perhaps you could try one of these wallpapers:

Semi-Drum, Semi Drum x 2, and Stripy Jumper available via the collection

Want something bigger?  That’s my girl:

There’s those darn animals again.  Here are some wallpaper murals that don’t belong to the creepy phyllum:

Femme Fatal available via walnut wallpaper

oops, that was only one non-animal image, now I’m getting back to my roots with this animal-house mural:

Home Made Restaurant

Yum, if the food at this restaurant is 1/4 as good as their design, then they shall be serving the people for eternity.  Great.  Now I’m hungry.

And finally, an image that is neither animal or silhouette:

Interior Shot by Gabby Zimmermann

Ok, so maybe this wall doesn’t really fit in, but it sure is pretty and I would hang the hell out of that wallpaper given the right opportunity.

So, what do you guys think?  Should I go for a gigantic wall mural (please don’t suggest a wall sticker!) or should I play it safe and do something that actually says “real people sleep here?”

Wall mural, anything less will leave you disappointed.

  2. please sir says:

These are crazy fun – I like the birdcages! Good luck – post before and after pics!

  3. erin says:

I like the birdcage idea. And I like how they hung lights inside them… maybe you could hang a small picture, or sconces on either side?

  4. karly says:

You know, I had pretty much decided to skip the mural because I really really wanted a big piece of art, now that it’s time to start pulling all of this together I’m just not sure.

  5. Cassie says:

I like the horses. Giant faces seem a little creepy for a bedroom.

You could buy a giant pre-stretched canvas (or set of them) and paint it yourself. Start with a solid color, or two colors with a shape (using a giant stencil). A painting would be easier to switch out if you change your mind or want to try a different idea.

  6. Connie says:

Remember what you told me, make a decision and move on. It was good advice, you should take it.

  7. erin says:

I am kind of liking the idea of using a mural as an architectural detail, kind of like a giant frame, and then hanging something more 3 dimensional on top of it, if that makes any sense…

Cassie, I’m with you on the giant faces! Although a giant Mattybear head could be funny.

Connie, that is super advice for me, as well.

  8. karly says:

Erin & Cassie, great ideas!!! Of course, now my head is spinning and it’s getting even more complicated. I like my mom’s advice (thrown back at me): make a decision and move on.

  9. Raina says:

Porn mural. The pornier, the better. But make it high art like that drawing Erin has.

It’s your bedroom, you need a little, er, titillation.

  10. karly says:

Raina, I knew there was a reason I loved you. I’ve been leaning towards the porn one for a while, I think I’ll go for it! Which picture does Erin have? Homegirl has lots of art

  11. rexNYC says:

I’d love to turn a photo I took of Prada Marfa into a wall mural. Any idea how?

  12. karly says:

I LOVE Prada Marfa! I haven’t gotten to see it in person, but it’s just so genius!!! There are a few ways you could go about making it into a mural, do you want it to be black and white or full color?

I think I smell a how-to post coming on… I’ll do one for you guys after I paint mine!! Thanks for the idea

  13. erin says:

Rex, this place will make a vinyl mural for you that you can just stick onto your wall. I haven’t used them before, but I’ve heard good things, and for the size, their prices are very reasonable.

  14. Raina says:

Isn’t there a drawing from a friend of hers in college she thought about hanging in her entry? The drawing, not the friend.

    Kinda scribbly naughty bits.

  15. Raina says:

Although I really dig the full-on orgasma-girl in the first picture.

  16. rexNYC says:

Karly, the photo is b&w. I looked at the vinyl mural link erin kindly provided; that’s definitely an option.

You should definitely check out Marfa!

  17. erin says:

Rex, I forgot to add that Design Your Walls also makes mural sized wallpaper… They have a pretty good printer, but it’s a bit more pricey.

  18. rexNYC says:

Yikes, Design Your Walls is price-ay!

Hmmm I wonder if I could just have it enlarged at Kinko’s to the largest size. But then how would I get it on the wall? I’d hate to glue it on like wallpaper.

Hmmmmmmm I guess the vinyl mural is actually the best idea! And it’s only $95 for the largest size they make.

    Thanks ladies!

  19. karly says:

Wow, only $95!! What a great deal! I’m glad Erin could point you in the right direction.

If you want to see how to do a 1-color, DIY version, stay tuned, I’ll be posting my how-to after I paint my bedroom in the next week or two.

Raina: how could I forget Naughty Bits???? I’m going to play around with a few ideas on my computer and will keep you all posted.

  20. karly says:

oh, also, Rex, Surface View (linked above under the beetle picture) will do custom murals, I’m not sure what their prices are like… but I’m guessing they’re not $95

  21. Diana says:

More, more, more! This is just a tease. I’d love to see murals, even slightly down-sized ones for odd-shaped nooks and crannies.

And I got much love for the porn lady, too. Can’t help myself.

    -Straight Diana

  22. karly says:

oh, good idea, Diana! Mini murals for nooks! I love it!! If I remember correctly, you have just such a nook in your office that could use a mural!

Yep, I’m currently leaning towards a version of the porn lady for my bedroom. Will it be done by the time you come for thanksgiving? I hope so, but I doubt it. A girl can dream.

  23. design says:

    design…

    very nice design…

  24. The finest vinyl wall decal material…

Well remember that most of the action sports that you love were not even around when he was a kid. So you definitely need to get him some sports wall decals of his own. Now he may not be able to keep the sports wall decals up all the time, but when you…
