I’m starting this new column because sometimes I come across things for which I genuinely can’t determine my feelings. That’s where you come in, and isn’t it comforting to know there’s no wrong answer? It’s not like I’m a teacher, slamming the sledgehammer of knowledge across your knuckles when you answer incorrectly, or like your boss who thinks the answer to improving performance is assigning more TPS reports. I’m even nicer than your kids — I promise I will never scream at you in public if I don’t like what you’re doing. Just playing along is alright by me.

So: Yes or No?

Maximo Riera’s Octopus Chair. Hip Lovecraftian throne, or nightmare from the deep?

Please please please don’t forget to tune in early next week for my big reveal of Ike’s nursery/playroom redo! It’s almost done and it’s looking pretty cute, if I do say so myself…

Happy weekend, ya’ll!

Oh! PS:

It appears Apartment Therapy’s annual Homies bizness is going down, so if you feel like heading over HERE and nominating us, Karly and I will be your eternal wives in heaven. That’s a pretty good deal, right?

  1. There’s something kind of awe-inspiring about this Kraken, it’s cracking me up.
I’d never have it in my home, but in the lobby of an avant-garde hotel, or possibly in a KWID-like setting, it could be statement-y.
Clearly it’s whimsical, not meant to be taken too seriously — sort of a tentacular spectacular.
I’m picturing a dark blue boudoir, maybe with some sort ofexorbitantly-priced, one off, hand-painted wallpaper which, instead of a more predictable chinoiserie garden scene had a dark, inky underwater feel….can’t you hear the waves quietly crashing as the seaweed weaves?

Ha! I saw this recently too and just couldn’t make up my mind about either. Love it in theory but something about the proportion is weird. Ya know, cuz the octo on the chair butt is not the weird part… The wrinkled texture is creeping me out a bit too… I give it an A for effort but F for execution.

  3. NO. Definitely NO, NO, NO. It’s hideous! Way too literal.

  4. anita says:

    No.
But then again, I have a hard time eating calamari because of how it looks.
    Have a great weekend!!!! xo

  5. ModFruGal says:

AMA summed up my thoughts. Not in my house, but is it spectacular and (good) creepy in the right setting..methinks yes.

  6. I like this game.

    Maximo Riera’s Octopus Chair? No.
Drunk octopus wants to fight you? Yes!

The is not a good mash-up. Too much form, not enough function for the space it takes (including the fine art function).

  7. Erica says:

Like many interior designy things — yes in a photo, in a magazine, in a hotel, but nimby, nimhouse.

  8. Amy says:

I have to say NO! I’m all for interesting, weird things, but I feel like this is just too…something. I can, however, see it in a movie or a very creepy hotel lobby.

  9. Appletree says:

Nope. Uh uh. No way. Not anywhere.

  10. Naomi says:

Yes I agree with Alcira. I don’t see it happening in a residential space. But maybe some hotel…

  11. I kind of love it. Kind of.
I can see it in a kids room. Could it work in Ike’s new digs?

  12. erin says:

If it were gold, Camilla… I mean, wouldn’t it be kind of great in gold?

  13. Kate O'Sullivan says:

No. It looks like it was hoisted out of hell.

  14. Gold…nah. I see it in a primary blue. or hot pink. Perfect for a kiddie space!

  15. Ashley says:

You are hilarious! Just found you. Thanks for the good reads. :)

  16. erin says:

    Thanks, and welcome Ashley!

Camilla, primary blue would be hot!

  17. christa says:

If this were a side table it’d be ok. As a chair? No.

  18. pieter says:

Absolutely not. The transition from octopus to chair is not resolved. The armrests are an after thought and are not integrated into the chair. The proportions of the chair are not good either. It’s like the functional part was just banged on. The idea is fantastic, but it lacks finesse. Lalanne would blow the shit out of this concept and EVERYONE would want one!

  19. pieter says:

btw. I just voted for you…

  20. erin says:

Good point about Lalanne, Pieter. And thanks for voting for us!

  21. Matt says:

    Great idea, badly executed.

  22. Cassie says:

I usually appreciate batshit decor, but this is disappointing.

  23. Mary in LA says:

    Chairthulhu! :-)

Concur w/above analyses. In a public space, yes, okay, as long as any freaked-out persons (particularly of the very young persuasion) can walk around it well out of hypothetical tentacle range. In my house, no.

  24. Ok, coming to the post late and my brain says no, no, no and has a list of reasons, but my soul says YES to this monstrosity in all its unresolved glory! Why? Because I would love to be perched on this bad boy, working away and getting all stressy and cranky, oblivious to the danger behind me. Cue the sanity/food/bathroom break. Then what do I see upon my return? Giant octopus of doom! Taking names and space! And like *that* my good mood would be restored. I just don’t think I could ever get inured to his massive tentacles. (heh heh heh)

This chair is like the ipod timer alarm that sounds like a submarine klaxon. That damn sound scares the crap out of me every single time it goes off because some where in my reptilian brain I think we’ve been hit by torpedoes and now have to dive for our lives! Not that I’ve ever seen a submarine up close. But the primal instinct to “man the battle stations” knows no logic. This chair provokes a similar response. Reptile brain likes it, human brain agrees with other posters.

  25. Margot Polo says:

Yes! I knew I’d find my captain’s chair somewhere.

  26. rob says:

I have been silently following your guys for like a year, (wow that sounds creepy- but you you know what I mean) and I wanted to say how great your blog is……funny and fabulous!
YES! I LOVE this chair – it is Ursula (from the little mermaid) meets The Munsters meets wing chair….
    Great and weird find!!

  27. erin says:

Thanks for following us, Rob! Love and adoration is never creepy… unless you show up at my front door unannounced.

  28. I’m the freakiest person I know; but this chair is too freaky for me. Or maybe, too much ‘tentacle’, not enough ‘chair’.

    Nah, it’s too freaky! :-)
